In the Philippines, security guards are defined as anybody who offers or renders personal service to watch or secure either residential or business establishments.
They are commonly known by the names of “sekyu,” “kuya guard,” “manong guard,” or simply “SG” followed by the name written on their uniforms.
But security guards in the Philippines are often treated as “all-around-employees”, carrying bags of customers, parking cars, and running errands for their bosses.
Through the years of providing public service, BITAG witnessed firsthand an increased number of security guards seeking all kinds of assistance.
From the unending complaints of below legal minimum wage, long hours of work, difficult working conditions to abusive practices they encounter from their employers or sometimes from society.
Just recently, controversial cases of security guards being the center of abuse have opened the minds of the public.
But the horrible truth is that these professionals who provide us frontline security don’t really receive the right type of security at all.
This was a wake-up call to BITAG, it’s about time to bring back the dignity and pride to our fellow security guards.
The goal, bring the horrible and abusive realities of security guards who seek help from BITAG to the House of Representatives.
BITAG choose no other than ACT-CIS Partylist to work with, to start a partnership that will provide security to those who secure us.
Together with the representatives of ACT-CIS Partylist, BITAG has been silently but not secretly helping to translate these problematic realities into a law that will solidify the protection of their rights.
Last September 14, the exploratory talk for the MAGNA CARTA FOR SECURITY GUARDS started.
Officials and staff of BITAG were welcomed by members of the ACT-CIS Partylist at the House of Representatives.
The MAGNA CARTA FOR SECURITY GUARD is currently in the process of being drafted by ACT-CIS Partylist.
A lot of hard work needs to be put in drafting this law but BITAG believes that ACT-CIS Partylist with its tagline “Kakampi ng Inapi” can represent the abused and left-out group of security guards.
