Nigerian mixed martial artist Israel Adesanya registered another historic damage against long-time rival Alex Pereira of Brazil.
Adesanya on Saturday failed to defend his UFC middleweight title after suffering a knockout defeat against Pereira.
The Brazilian contender dethroned “The Last Style Bender” via knockout victory in the fifth round of the UFC 281 title match.
Similar to their previous kickboxing matches, Adesanya had been winning the fight until Pereira managed to turn the tables in the end.
In the first round, Pereira was caught in trouble after Adesanya fired a devastating shot in the last seconds of the fight, almost knocking out the former.
Pereira bounced back well in the second round.
However, Adensaya put a lot of pressure on him in the ground during the third, which he ended with a nice sharp axe kick.
Adesanya dominated the match in the fourth round over the noticeably fatigued Pereira.
However, the situation started to change when Pereira’s camp told him to go for a TKO in the fifth.
Pereira asked former UFC light heavyweight champion and mentor Glover Teixera, “Do I have to knock him out?”
Teixera replied: “You do have to knock him out.”
Pereira answered the call and fired a barrage of heavy punches in the last minutes of the fifth round, knocking out Adesanya and hailed as the new UFC middleweight champion.
It is the second outing Pereira knocked out Adesanya in a rival match.
The two have previously faced each other in a professional kickboxing match in 2016 and 2017, with Adesanya losing on both occasions.
