Habang papalapit ang Kapaskuhan at Bagong Taon, dagsa na naman sa lansangan ang sari-saring pailaw, luses, paputok, at mga magagarbong firecrackers.
Pero babala ng environmental watchdog na EcoWaste Coalition, hinay-hinay sa pagbili ng mga paputok dahil sa matinding epekto nito sa kalusugan ng tao.
Ayon sa national coordinator ng grupo na si Aileen Lucero, bukod sa panganib sa buhay at ari-arian ng mga firecrackers, malaki rin aniya ang banta nito sa kalusugan ng publiko.
“Aside from injuries caused by firecrackers and fireworks, these products are packed with chemicals such as carbon, potassium nitrate, sulfur and other substances of concern, which can adversely affect the rights of every Filipino to a clean and non-toxic environment,” ayon sa press statement ng grupo.
Dahil dito, nangako ang EcoWaste Coalition na lalong palalakasin ang kanilang “Iwas Paputok” campaign ngayong taon dahil sabik ang mga Filipino sa pagsalubong ng Bagong Taon dahil sa dalawang taong restriction sa social gatherings bunsod ng Covid-19 pandemic.
Paalala ng grupo, suriing mabuti ang mga bibilhing paputok dahil kadalasan ay kontaminado ang mga ito ng mapanganib na kemikal tulad ng lead, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, manganese at zinc.
Dahil wala umanong abiso o babala hinggil sa panganib na dulot ng mga chemical content na ito, lalo raw nalalagay sa panganib ang kalusugan ng publiko.
Ilan sa maaaring makuha sa mataas na content ng mga kemikal na ito ay ang sakit sa atay, kidney, skin damage at hypersensitivity, nasal mucosa ulceration, nasal septum perforation; copper dust fumes at respiratory tract.
Ang mataas na content umano ng lead ay nakakaapekto sa dugo, utak, at central nervous system. Habang ang manganese dioxide naman ay masama sa baga na posibleng magresulta ng Parkinsonian symptoms, rigidity, muscular pains at tremor.r
