The soft spoken Filipino pride and former heavyweight champion Brandon Vera lost in his comeback fight against Iranian giant Amir Aliakbari in the ONE 164 held at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Saturday.
Vera, now 45, was looking to bounce back from his title defeat to Arjan Bhullar in April 2021 but went into a deluge when his Iranian foe pulled the win through a sensational takedown.
The Filipino-American could do little to defend himself on the ground as Aliakbari poured him with heavy hammer fists.
Vera was landing a few shots early in the fight but was incapable of utilizing his signature leg kicks which could leave him open to Aliakbari’s takedown.
The referee stopped the fight at 3:37 seconds into the early round.
After the fight, Vera announced his retirement from the mixed martial arts truce.
The Fil-American veteran left his MMA gloves at the center of the cage, signifying the end of his 2-decade career.
“Pasensya na Kababayan, ang tagal ko nang ginagawa ‘to mga 20 plus years na. You just witnessed The Truth Vera’s last fight. I wish I could’ve come out with a win,” Vera ended.
