Nasabat ng Bureau of Customs (BOC) ang P17 milyong halaga ng smuggled na puting sibuyas mula China na itinago sa mga kontrabando ng “ukay-ukay”.
Ayon kay Customs Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz, idineklara ng consignee ng tatlong container na dry goods tulad ng blouse, tsinelas, pinggan at mga plastic wares ang laman ng kargamento.
Nang isinailalim sa physical examination ang mga kargamento, dito natuklasan na ang laman ng mga container ay mga imported na sibuyas at mga used-clothes o ukay-ukay.
Binalaan ni Ruiz ang mga smugglers na ‘wag nang tangkaing magpuslit ng kontrabando sa loob ng bansa dahil siguradong masusukol ito ng operatiba ng BOC.
“We swore to protect the country’s borders from this kind of illegal activity. If they think they can use the ukay-ukay to hide the onions, they are mistaken,” ani Ruiz.
Inatasan din ni Ruiz ang mga tauhan ng BOC na higpitan pa ang pagmamatyag sa mga containers na naglalaman ng smuggled na sibuyas.
Inaalam na rin ng ahensya ang mga indibidwal at grupo ng mga negosyante na pasimuno sa pagpupuslit ng mga imported na sibuyas at iba pang uri ng smuggled na agricultural products.
