Kinuwestiyon kahapon ng ng mga senador sa harap ng iba’t ibang ahensya kung bakit naipasa ang 1995 Act for Salt Iodization Nationwide o ASIN Law. Ito daw aniya ang batas na pumatay sa salt industry ng bansa.
“Why was this law passed? Sino ba ang nag-advise sa Congress na i-pass ‘tong salt iodization law na ‘to? Sabihin ‘nyo sa’kin kung sino ba ang nag-influence sa Congress na i-pass ‘to? Pinatay nito ang salt industry. Bakit ‘nyo pinapatay ang salt industry?” ito ang naging tanong ni Sen. Cynthia Villar sa pagdinig ng Senate committee on agriculture, food, and agrarian reform.
Sinabi pa ng senadora, inobliga ng batas ang mga local salt producer na gawin iodize ang kanilang produkto na nagresulta sa pag-angkat ng mga non-iodized salt.
Dito aniya nagsimulang mamatay ang salt industriya dahil hindi kinaya ng mga salt producers na dumaan iodization process.
“You have to understand our small farmers. They are not as well educated as you are,” sagot ng senadora.
Ayon kay Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva, bilang bansa sa may mahabang baybayin sa mundo, kaya natin mag-produce ng asin ng hindi kinakailangan mag-import sa ibang bansa tulad ng Australia at China.
“Unfortunately, we have not made full use of the resources that we have and the salt industry has consistently been in decline. It baffles me that the Philippines, an agricultural country with shorelines that stretches for thousands of kilometers, would import 93 percent of our total salt requirements. This is very disheartening,” aniVillanueva.
Dapat aniya pangunahan ng Department of Agriculture ang pag-develop upang bumalik ang sigla ng salt industry.
“Nagtataka ako sa gobyernong ito. Kapag import nagkakagulo kayo kung sino ang in charge pero pag developmental, walang gustong umamin sino ang in charge,” ani Villar.
Ipinasa ang Asin law noong 1995 sa ilalim ni dating Pangulong Fidel Ramos sa layuning maglagay ng iodine sa asin para masugpo ang micronutrient malnutrition sa bansa.
