Sumabak na sa pagsasanay kasama ng Gilas Pilipinas ang bagong naturalized player ng bansa na si Justine Donta Brownlee para sa kanilang paghahanda sa ika-anim at huling window ng 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifyers.
Ito ang unang beses na nagsanay ang Barangay Ginebra Import kasama ang men’s national basketball team matapos nitong manumpa bilang isang Pinoy noong Jan. 16.
Noong lunes, pinangunahan ni Brownlee sa practice ang kalahati ng 24-man training pool ng Gilas Pilipinas sa Meralco gym sa gabay ng kanilang coach na si Vincent ‘Chot’ Reyes at lead deputy coach Earl Timothy Cone.
Kabilang sa mga nakasama ni Brownlee sa ensayo ay sina Japeth Aguilar at June Mar Fajardo ng Gin Kings, CJ Perez (San Miguel Beer), Roger Ray Pogoy at Calvin Oftana (TNT), Arvin Tolentino (North Port), at mga collegiate players na sina Kevin Quiambao, Francis Lopez, Mason Amos, Schonny Winston, at Jerome Lastimosa
Samantala, wala pa sa bansa ang mga campaigner ng Japan B. League na sina Kiefer Isaac at kapatid nitong si Ferdinand ‘Thirdy’ Ravena III, Bobby Ray Parks Jr., Jordan Heading, Carl Vincent Tamayo, at Dwight Ramos.
Nasa Australia naman ang 7’3” footer na si Kai Sotto na naglalaro sa National Basketball League para sa Adelaide 36ers.
Hindi Earl Scottie Thompson at Jamie Malonzo (Ginebra), Chris Newsome at Raymond Almazan (Meralco) at naturalized player na si Ange Kouame.
Nakatakdang makipagpukpukan ang Gilas kontra Lebanon at Jordan sa Feb. 24 at 27 para sa nalalabing Asian qualifyers.
