Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Friday issued a stern warning to those who will disseminate false bomb threats and pranks that they will be dealt accordingly when caught.
This stemmed after several incidents of bomb scares hit schools in Quezon City that resulted in disruption of classes. Hence, Belmonte immediately directed its City Council to craft an ordinance prescribing heavier penalties or fines to anyone who disseminates false information about bombs or explosives.
As of this writing, four schools namely New Era Elementary School, Emilio Jacinto High School, San Francisco High School and Ponciano Bernardo High School halted their classes after reporting bomb threats.
According to the Quezon City local government, the Quezon City Police District’s explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) unit declared the schools negative of any bombs or explosives after doing a thorough inspection.
“We will go after those who spread false information or pranks about bomb threats. Our schools are supposed to be a safe place for our students, and we will not take these pranks and threats lightly,” the local chief executive said during a consultation meeting with the Quezon City Police District (QCPD).
Meanwhile QCPD will work with the city and will arrest individuals spreading false bomb threats.
According to Presidential Decree No. 1727 entitled as, “Declaring As Unlawful the Malicious Dissemination of False information or the Willful Making of any Threat Concerning Bombs, Explosives or Any Similar Device or Means of Destruction and Imposing Penalties Therefor”, bomb scares are considered a violation.
