Los Angeles Lakers superstar Lebron James becomes the new all-time leading scorer in NBA history after surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387 career points in a Tuesday night game against Oklahoma City Thunders.
As the game started in Crypto.com Arena, James needed 36 points to break the mark that Abdul-Jabbar held for 39 years.
With a step back from the defense of Kenrich Williams 10.2 seconds left in the third quarter, the crowd roared in celebration as James fired the record-breaking jumper.
Abdul-Jabbar personally attended the game and applauded as James breaks his decade-long record.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver congratulated James and shook his hand in a game interruption to celebrate the iconic moment in NBA history.
“Everybody that has ever been a part of this run with me the last 20-plus years, I want to say thank you so much because I wouldn’t be me without all y’all. All y’all helped. All y’all’s passion and sacrifices helped me to get to this point,” Lebron said.
“And to the NBA, to Adam Silver, to the late great David Stern, thank you very much for allowing me to be a part of something I always dreamed about. I would never in a million years dreamt this to be even better than what it is tonight. So (expletive) man, thank you, guys,” he added.
Lebron finished the match reaching 38,890 points but the Lakers fell short to Thunders, 133-130.
The historical game was attended by celebrities such as Denzel Washington, Jay-Z, Usher, LL Cool J, Bad Bunny, and former Lakers players Bob McAdoo and James Worthy, along with Dwayne Wayde.
