Pounded him until the very end like Khabib, but still, Volkanovski lost to Makhachev.
Several MMA fans took their disappointment on social media saying Alexander Volkanovski was robbed of victory in his recent fight against UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev in UFC 284 at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia this Sunday, Feb. 12.
With less than two minutes remaining in the last round, the UFC featherweight champion gave everything he could and punished Makhachev with some classic ground-and-pound until the final bell rang.
But just as he thought that he dethroned Makhachev, Volkanovski suffered his first loss in UFC (12-1) after the three judges nodded a controversial unanimous decision win in favor of the Russian fighter, 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46.
MMA fans were quick to air their frustration on social media saying the Australian fighter should have won as he was more aggressive and defended himself well in the cage.
“There’s absolutely no way that was a unanimous decision. That’s disgraceful,” a netizen posted on Twitter.
“Ain’t no way! Volk was robbed!” another tweeted.
Volkanovski himself did not agree with the result and immediately called for a rematch.
“Just watched the fight, I definitely think I won 2,3 and 5. Surprised I didn’t get my hand raised! Let’s do the rematch, anywhere, anytime!” said a disappointed Volkanovski in his twitter post yesterday.
Meanwhile, Makhachev responded to the issue on his Twitter account and said: “Just watched the tape, and have to be fair, out of 25 minutes Volk got last 1 minute!”
