Nakasikwat ng bronze medal ang heptathlete na si Janry Ubas sa 10th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships na ginanap sa Astana, Kazakhstan noong linggo, Peb. 12.
Nakalikom ng 5,246 na puntos si Ubas mula sa pitong athletic event upang iuwi ang kaisa-isang medalya ng Pilipinas ngayon taon sa nasabing torneyo.
Nakuha ng Japanese heptathlete na si Yuma Maruyama ang ginto na may 5,801 puntos na sinundan naman ng kababayan nito na si Keisuke Okuda, 5,497.
Ineklipsan ni Ubas ang dating national record na 4,565 points na naitala ni Jesson Ramil Cid noong 2014 Asian championships na ginanap sa Hangzhou, China
Ito rin ang ikalawang medalya naiuwi ng bansa sa kasaysayan ng naturang biennial event matapos ang bronze medal performance ni Eric Cray sa men’s 60 meters sprint sa Doha, Qatar noong 2016.
“He put up a brave stand and showcased the Filipino’s fighting heart in the final event—the 1000-meter run—despite an injury, enabling him to secure points necessary to capture a podium finish,” ani Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association president Terry Capistrano.
Matatandaang nakatakda rin sanang lumaro sa nasabing torneyo si Filipino pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena subalit hindi ito natuloy dahil umano sa problemang pinansyal at logistik.
