Sinampahan ng kaso agricultural smuggling ang kapitan at mga tripulante ng MV Sunward matapos umano silang magtangka na magpuslit ng P240 milyong halaga ng refined sugar mula Thailand sa Pilipinas.
Sinabi ng Department of Agriculture (DA) na pormal nang isinampa ang kaso sa Office of the Assistant Secretary for DA Inspectorate and Enforcement noong Pebrero 9 sa Office of the Provincial Prosecutor ng Batangas City.
Matatandaan noong Enero 13, hinarang ng mga operatiba ng ng Customs Police Division-Enforcement and Security Service (CPD-ESS), Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS), at Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ang MV Sunward na may dalang asukal sa paligid ng Bauan at Mabini breakwaters sa Batangas.
Ang mga nakumpiska umanong white refined sugar na may kabuuang timbang na 50 kilo kada bag ay nakapangalan sa Stone Int’l. Co. Ltd. mula sa shipper na The Thai Sugar Trading Corp.
Sinabi naman ng Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) na walang import permit ang nasabing kargamento at walang notice of arrival na inihain sa Bureau of Customs (BOC).
Binubuo ang MV Sunward ng isang Filipino, anim na Indonesian, at pitong Chinese.
