Isiniwalat kahapon ni Senator Risa Hontiveros ang posibilidad na nakapasok na sa bansa ang mga smuggled na asukal galing Thailand.
Sa isang press conference, pinuna ni Hontiveros ang dumating na 260 na 20-foot containers sa Batangas Port noong Pebrero 9.
Sinabi ng senadora na maituturing itong technical smuggling dahil dapat nauna munang mapirmahan ang Sugar Order No. 6 ng Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).
Iprinensenta din ni Hontiveros ang ‘undated memorandum order’ kung saan nabigyan ng alokasyon ang tatlong importers na All Asian Countertrade, Sucden Philippines Inc. at Edison Lee Marketing Corporation.
Ayon sa dokumento, si Agriculture Undersecretary at Sugar Board Chairperson Domingo Panganiban ang nag-isyu ng nasabing memorandum order kay SRA Administrator David John Alba at dalawa pang board members na sina Pablo Azcona and Mitzi Mangwag.
Nakaladkad din ang pangalan ni Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin matapos ipakita ng senador ang liham na may petsang Enero 13, 2023 kung saan binanggit ni Panganiban sa All Asian Countertrade na pinapayagan nilang itong mag-angkat ng tone-toneladang asukal, alinsunod sa utos ni Bersamin.
Dagdag ng senadora na maituturing umano itong ‘government sponsored’ ang hinihinalang smuggling sakaling mapatunayang totoo.
