Dahil sa mga sunod-sunod na pananambang sa mga lokal na opisyal, pinag-aaralan ngayon ng Philippine National Police (PNP) na dagdagan ang bilang ng mga police security escort sa mga local official.
Sa pagdinig kahapon ng House Committee on Public Order and Safety sinabi ni Brig. Gen. Matthew Baccay ng PNP Directorate for Personnel Records and Management na sa kasalukuyan, maximum sa dalawang police lang ang kanilang ibinibigay na security detail sa isang opisyal na may “validated threats”.
Subalit matapos ang pagpatay kay Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo, ayon kay Baccay marami nang local official ang humihiling sa kanila ng karagdagan police escort.
Sa ilalim ng 2019 PNP memorandum circular, ang mga local chief executive ay may karapatang magkaroon ng maximum na dalawang security officer mula sa Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG). Para naman sa mga “highly exceptional cases,” maaaring humiling ang isang opisyal ng hanggang anim na escort mula sa PNP o sa mga private agency.
Samantala, pinayuhan naman ni Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa ang mga kapwa niya senador na maging handa at palakasin ang kanilang seguridad. Nirekomenda nya rin na magsanay na gumamit ng baril sa firing range.
“If a governor could be assassinated right in his own house, assassins could do it to anybody, including senators whose constituency is the whole country,” paliwanag ng dating PNP Chief.
