Upang matugunan ang pagkalugi at pagbaba ng produksyon ng mga mangingisda, ipinagutos ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ang set-up ng cold storage facility sa iba’t ibang fish port sa bansa.
“Ang naging solusyon dyan ay maglagay ng cold storage facilities doon sa mga bagsakan ng isda para ma-preserve naman ‘yung isda at hindi natin kailangan itapon ang maraming nasisira, napapanis na isda,” pahayag ni Marcos.
Ayon sa Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), nasa pagitan ng 25 hanggang 40 porsyento ang nasisirang isda dahil sa kakulangan ng post-harvest equipment tulad ng blast freezer, ice-making machine, cold storage warehouses at fish landing sites.
Kung maibaba ang pagkasira ng isda ng 8 hanggang 10 porsyento, hindi na daw kailangan umasa pa ang Pilipinas na umangkat ng isda sa ibang mga bansa.
Kasalukuyan itinatayo ang mga cold storage facility sa General Santos at Cagayan de Oro at plano magtayo pa ng labing isa pa (11) na magiging operational sa katapusan ng taon.
