Iminungkahi ni Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile na alisin sa Konstitusyon ng Pilipinas ang pagbabawal sa bansa ng paggamit ng nuclear weapon.
Sa pagdinig ng Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendments and Revision of Codes Miyerkules ng hapon (March 22), sinabi ni Enrile na ang nuclear weapon ban ay ang pinaka hindi kanais-nais na probisyon ng administrasyong Corazon Aquino sa 1987 Constitution.
Ayon sa Article II Section 8 ng Saligang Batas, “Tinatanggap at sinusunod ng Pilipinas, nang naaalinsunod sa kapakanang pambansa, ang patakarang malaya laban sa pagkakaroon ng mga sandatang nuklear sa teritoryo nito.”
“In my personal opinion, that is the most serious and unwanted provision of the constitution. In the modern world today, a small country can protect itself against the superpowers if they have nuclear weapons,” wika ni Enrile
“We should remove that restriction and make the country flexible. If we can afford it, we should have nuclear weapons, so our people will not be trampled upon,” dagdag nito.
Matatandaang ang Pilipinas ay isa mga bansang lumagda sa Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons noong 2017, na nagbabawal sa pagpapaunlad, produksyon at pag-iimbak ng mga mapanganib na armas upang tuluyang alisin ito saan mang panig ng mundo.
