Ayon kay Albay 2nd District Representative Joey Salceda, pwedeng maging efficient at environment-friendly ang mga gawang Pinoy na sasakyan kaya dapat ikunsidera ng gobyerno ang paggamit ng mga modernong bersyon ng mga jeepney sa bansa kaysa tuluyang alisin ang mga ito sa lansangan.
“I would summarize my proposal in three points: First, support domestic manufacturing of more modern and more efficient, but similarly stylish jeepneys. Second, increase the subsidy per unit to meet the financial viability gap. Third, buy out old jeepneys for cash,” wika ng House Committee on Ways and Means chairman.
Ayon sa mambabatas, ang nasabing mass transport system ay naglalabas ng mas mababang carbon emissions per capita kumpara sa mga pribadong sasakyan na nakakapag sakay lamang ng limitadong numero ng mga pasahero.
Noong Marso, matatandaang nagsagawa ng kilos-protesta ang ilang transport group laban sa napipintong pag-phaseout ng gobyerno sa mga lumang jeepney na nakatakda sanang sa Hunyo 2023.
Ito ang nag udyok kay Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. na umapela sa mga jeepney drivers at sinabing pag aaralan pa ng husto ng gobyerno ang Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program.
Bukod dito, sinabi rin ng Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) na tatagal hanggang Disyembre 31, 2023 ang bisa ng mga provisional franchise ng mga tradisyunal na jeepney.
