Kasalukuyang hawak ngayon ni Tapales (37-3, 19 KOs) ang World Boxing Association (WBA) at International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight titles matapos ang split-decision victory kontra kay Murodjon Akhmadaliev ng Uzbekistan noong Abril 8 sa San Antonio, Texas.
Subalit bago ang minimithing showdown, susubukan munang agawin ni Inoue ang dalawa sa natitirang super bantamweight title mula kay World Boxing Organization (WBO) at World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Stephen Fulton sa July 25 sa Tokyo, Japan.
Ayon kay Tapales, mas gusto niyang makatapat si Inoue (24-9, 21 KOs) kaysa kay Fulton (21-0, 8 KOs) dahil sa tingin nito ay mas pabor kung ang Japanese boxing superstar ang kanyang makalaban dahil narin sa style nito at marketability.
“I got a message for ‘The Monster’. Hopefully he will win this fight so that we will meet. ‘The Monster’ and ‘The Nightmare’. Who will be the better fighter?” mensahe ni Tapales.
“He’s a Monster but I know he has a nightmare — and that’s me. Don’t sleep, man,” dagdag nito.
