Sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon, inaprubahan na ng bansang Japan ang paggamit ng abortion pills.
Ang abortion ay legal sa Japan hanggang sa ika-22 linggo ng pagbubuntis kung ito ay may pahintulot ng kabiyak. Ito ay isinasagawa sa pamamagitan ng surgical procedure.
Sa isang pahayag nitong April 28, sinabi ng health ministry ng Japan na inaprubahan nito ang abortion pill na ginawa ng British Pharmaceutical company na Linepharma.Ang nasabing ay gamot ay two-step treatment ng mifepristone at misoprostol na isinumite upang pag-aralan noong Disyembre 2021.
Ang kahalintulad na abortion pill ay ginagamit din ng ibang bansa kabilang ang France, na unang nag-apruba noong 1988, at United States, na isinapubliko naman noong 2000.
Ayon sa ulat, ang halaga ng abortion pill at medical consultation ay aabot sa 100,000 yen o katumbas ng US$700 .
Bukod dito, itinutulak din ng ilang grupo sa Japan ang paggamit ng morning-after pill na pumipigil naman sa pagbubuntis.
