The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White is now in a bad light after a video of slapping his wife in a nightclub on New Year’s Eve circulated and became a ‘talk of the town’ in social media.
Dana and his wife Anne celebrated a pre-New Year party with their friends in a VIP area in El Squid Roe in Cabo San Lucas on Saturday when things got out of hand for the couple.
In the video footage, Dana appeared to say something to Anne when his wife suddenly slapped him, and the UFC boss immediately retaliated by slapping his wife back in the face.
Dana was under fire on social media after the video flooded the internet.
“Dana White needs to be charged & resign immediately!” a netizen tweeted.
“Alcohol is not a good excuse for hitting a woman! Never should anyone hit someone else, especially your spouse. Dana White has done a lot for UFC, but now is the time for him to step down and retire,” another tweeted.
The UFC top honcho also criticized in his previous television remark saying, “you can never bounce back from putting your hands on a woman.”
In an interview with TMZ Sports, Dana admitted that the fighting with his wife was a misunderstanding but quickly added, “it is never an excuse to justify his actions”.
“Unfortunately, we were both drinking too much on New Year’s Eve and things got out of control, on both sides. We’ve talked this through as a family and apologized to each other,” Dana said.
“People are going to have their opinions on this and people’s opinions would be right, especially in my case. You don’t put your hands on a woman, ever.”
Dana and his wife Anne are now concerned about their family, especially their three children that dragged into public opinion after the video leaked into social media.
Meanwhile, Anne told the media interviews that “Dana and I have been married for almost 30 years. To say this is out of character for him is an understatement — nothing like this has ever happened before.”
“Unfortunately, we were both drinking too much on New Year’s Eve and things got out of control, on both sides. We’ve talked this through as a family and apologized to each other. I just hope people will respect our privacy for the sake of our kids.”
