Tatlong OFW ang nasawi at lima ang sugatan matapos kumalat ang sunog sa ikalawang palapag ng Lian-Hwa Foods Corporation sa Taiwan noong nakaraang Martes, Abril 25, 2023.
Ayon kay Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) chair Silvestre Bello III, kinilala ang mga nasawi sa sunog na sina Renato Larua, Nancy Revilla, and Aroma Miranda at agarang din nitong ipinaalam sa pamilya ng mga nasawi ang nasabing insidente.
“My heart goes out to them in their hour of extreme sorrow,” ayon kay Bello na inaabot ang kaniyang pakikiramay sa pamilya ng mga yumao.
Limang OFW naman ang naitalang nasugatan sa sunog na sina Sheila May Abas, Jessie Boy Samson, Maricris Fernando, Rodel Uttao and Santiago Suba Jr. na daliang isinugod sa ospital at ngayon ay nasa maayos na kalagayan maliban kay Fernando na nasa loob pa ng intensive care unit (ICU).
“They are still under observation in different hospitals. They suffered severe carbon monoxide poisoning and are currently undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy,” ayon kay Bello.
Dagdag pa nito, gising na ang mga pasyente at kasalukuyang nagpapagaling sa loob ng ospital. Bagamat nasa loob pa ng ICU si Fernando at hindi pa nagigising, patuloy parin ang dialysis nito.
Bibigyan ang mga naapektuhan ng sunog ng 5,000 piso mula sa opisina ni Bello samantalang nakikipag-ugnayan ang Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) sa mga Taiwanese authorities upang maayos ang mga dokumentong kailangan para sa karagdagang benepisyo na 200,000 pesos na death benefit, 20,000 pesos na burial benefit, at iba pang klase ng tulong na maaaring ibigay ng mga ito.
“We are in close coordination with police authorities regarding the incident and investigation, and the swift repatriation of the remains of those who died,” sabi ni Bello.
Sinisiguro ni Bello na mabibigyan ng sapat na tulong ang pamilya ng mga biktima sa parehong bansang Pilipinas and Taiwan.
