Ikinababahala ng World Health Organization (WHO) na ang pagdami ng kaso ng bird flu outbreaks sa mga mammals ay makatutulong sa nasabing virus na kumalat ito ng mas madali sa mga tao.
Simula noong huling parte ng 2021, nabahala ang Europe sa sinasabing worst-ever outbreak ng brd flu. Samantala, nakaranas din ng parehong outbreak ang North at South America.
Ito naman ang nagdulot sa culling o pagpatay sa milyong milyong poultry sa buong mundo, karamihan dahil sa H5N1 strain ng virus na unang lumabas noong 1996.
“Avian influenza viruses normally spread among birds, but the increasing number of H5N1 avian influenza detections among mammals — which are biologically closer to humans than birds are — raises concern that the virus might adapt to infect humans more easily,” ayon sa statement ng WHO.
Ayon pa sa WHO, nagsisilbi ang mga hayop bilang “mixing vessels” ng mga virus na nagdudulot ng paglabas ng mas bagong klase ng virus.
“Although largely affecting animals, these outbreaks pose ongoing risks to humans,” ani parehong statement.
Kasama ang Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) ng United Nations (UN) at ang World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), inuudyok ng WHO ang ibang mga bansa na magsama-sama para isalba ang mga hayop at protektahan ang mga tao.
“There is a recent paradigm change in the ecology and epidemiology of avian influenza which has heightened global concern as the disease spread to new geographical regions and caused unusual wild bird die-offs, and alarming rise in mammalian cases,” ayon kay WOAH science chief Gregorio Torres.
